Mingled with crystal icicles, and

multi-colored stars we collected,

a dangle of frosted lights give off

just enough to tint shadow’s thaw.

We admire new porcelain ornaments –

yet grandmother’s handmade birds

and painted egg shells – each crafted

legacy, a trust to will to children’s

children, and hope they savor trinkets

and treasures that never melt.

Sam Barbee

Sam Barbee’s poems have appeared Poetry South, The NC Literary Review, Crucible, Asheville Poetry Review, The Southern Poetry Anthology VII: North Carolina.   His second poetry collection, That Rain We Needed (2016, Press 53), was a nominee for the Roanoke-Chowan Award as one of North Carolina’s best poetry collections of 2016.
