Can we start over? she asks,

and I think about the last two years,

how we maneuvered a couch up

that thinning urine-soaked stairwell,

how she forgot the code and we

had to wait for someone to open

the door, how they kept looking back

as though this were some hustle involving

a full-sized couch; the cushions sitting outside

like gossiping old ladies in cheap plastic chairs

swatting flies, and how we were so happy to just

get the damn thing into the apartment that

we fell on the floor and watched the ceiling

do nothing, and now she wanted to undo

all of it with one simple utterance; she had

obviously forgotten about the chicken wire

on the porch and her mother’s old fridge

which was not going to carry itself.
