Sounds of the City (New Delhi)

Sounds of the City (New Delhi)

Ubiquitous like grey smog
is the sound of traffic
coating head and ears
with a soundscape floating
over all other noises
in this noisiest of cities.
It’s a lyrical racket,
like Philip Glass and Ornette
improvising for a fluid street
band: thrumming bus engines,
percussive brake-squeals,
the chatter of tiny tuk-tuk
motors and a colossal chorus
of car horns, singing
alone and together,
like the voices of more
people than seem possible,
pulsing the city’s arteries.
