Black Ice

 Black Ice

more than a dusting

traffic ebbs

her toddler’s chatter flows

his round cheeks

blush

constant brake lights

rearview glance

backward smile

a lasting impact

shrieks reverberate

metal on metal

surround sound

emergency vehicles

wail

his final lullaby

under a nimbus moon

his halo fits

perfectly

snow bank flashes red and blue

exhaust fumes permeate

her scream

goldfish crackers

swim on

the ice-crusted ditch

dawn illuminates

blood stains in the snow

cardinals sing

carrying his coat

she leaves the hospital

childless
